Environments are plain and barren, dungeons have little identity of their own, and maps feel as if its been assembled from a limited amount of stock parts. It’s a direct sequel to the evergreen loveliness of The Wind Waker, but in trying to emulate that on DS hardware they’ve ended up with a launch PSOne game aesthetic. Then there’s the awkward fact that this is surprisingly ugly. Padding out a game’s run-time by recycling assets and puzzles is a tried-and-tested tactic by less scrupulous developers, but it’s depressing to see it in The Legend of Zelda.

If it were chopped out you could probably beat the game in about four hours, as each ‘regular’ dungeon only takes about 20-25 minutes to clear.

My theory is that the developers realised that without it Phantom Hourglass is simply too short.

So why is this crap thing at the center of a Nintendo game at all? If the Temple of the Ocean King had been visited three times – at the beginning, middle, and end of your adventure – it’d be fine, but every time you step inside there’s a feeling of dread at having to go through it one more time. Its few defenders will point out that there’s a warp to the halfway point and that the gadgets let you take shortcuts, but in my experience those shortcuts are minor skips. This means you need to slow down and be stealthy or risk running through the whole damn thing again.ĭid I mention that even in a best case scenario you need to revisit this fucking place six times? Rubbing salt in is that the puzzles reset after each visit, so the same doors need to be unlocked repeatedly. The Temple is on a strict time limit and patrolled by invincible monsters whose attacks remove 30 seconds from the clock. But actually playing it is the most miserable thing I’ve done in a Zelda game so far. On paper it’s a novel twist for Zelda: getting better at it gives you tangible evidence of how your skills are developing and adds a sense of continuity to the story. This is a dungeon you must revisit throughout the game, each time getting further and further inside using your new gadgets. Yup, I’m talking the Temple of the Ocean King. Two things that particularly annoyed me was that holding the teeny DS stylus is tough on the fingers after a while and that your hand is often covering a large part of the screen.īut that’s small potatoes compared to the real reason Phantom Hourglass is painful. Getting Link from A to B isn’t a pain, but it’s still a step down from the precision of using a d-pad to get around. Link runs to where you point to on screen, attacking is done by tapping and swiping enemies, and various gadgets have their own touch-screen gimmicks. The nicest thing I can say about the controls is that they work. This resulted in a game that’s controlled entirely using a stylus and touchscreen, has puzzles based around making notes in your map, and makes frequent use of the microphone.

The objective seems to have been to develop a Zelda game that took full advantage of the unique DS hardware. But this is a double-edged sword: sometimes you get a Breath of the Wild and sometimes you get The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. From the Zelda II: The Adventure of Link onward most new entries either revamp the design, explore new technologies, or both.
